Google Vids
AI-Driven Video Editor
Google Vids is an AI-powered video creation app for work announced at Google Next 2024. Meet your new designer, videographer, director, editor, storyteller, and video-producing assistant within Google Drive. You can generate a fun and interesting video from a series of prompts related to styling, images, scripts, voice, music, and effects, all powered by the latest Gemini AI version. Google’s latest Workspace app reflects the way people talk at work now — and maybe signals the end of the slide deck supremacy era.

This project is centered on developing an AI-powered video editing app tailored for novice users. It enables users to communicate through text or voice, receiving intuitive voice-to-voice AI responses that foster natural and engaging interactions.
Our focus is on creating an immersive experience that combines AI-driven content creation with sophisticated conversational capabilities. We aim to provide professional-grade audio and video production features, prioritizing prototyping and high-fidelity interactions.

Role
My contributions were pivotal in the development of Google Vids. With a challenging deadline for the Cloud Next Conference in Las Vegas in April 2024, the pressure was to ideate, design, and implement — key app features in a short time period.
I joined the project late, and I faced the challenge of swiftly integrating into a rapidly moving project alongside my manager. The "video timeline" was the most crucial component of the app and this was my area of focus during the project. My scope of work also included conceptualizing shortcuts and voice commands.

Problem
Users looking for lightweight video editing solutions often find existing apps lacking in intuitive design and functionality. In developing Vids, our new app utilizing the Google Slides tech stack, the design team faces challenges due to vague directives and limited user insights. This hampers our ability to understand user needs, risking the creation of an intelligent video editor that fails to meet market demands. Prioritizing user research and feedback is essential to ensure we deliver a seamless and engaging experience.

Challenge
The development of a brand new app, Vids, has emerged from the need to address a growing demand for lightweight video editing solutions in the market. The design team was tasked with building this app from the ground up using the Google Slides tech stack, with the main directive to learn from competitors. However, the project faced significant challenges due to limited insights from the research team, which hindered a clear understanding of user needs and market expectations. Additionally, the design team received vague and imprecise directives from leadership, complicating the process of leveraging Google’s advanced technology to create a top-tier intelligent video editor. This lack of direction and clarity has created obstacles in aligning the app’s development with market demands and user expectations.
Solution
We transformed Google Slides into a video app by converting the filmstrip into a timeline and the Slides canvas into a video screen. Close collaboration with the Slides team was crucial, as they offered valuable insights through weekly meetings, shared documents, and bug reports. This process involved utilizing the same UI and tech stack as Slides, understanding the Slides environment and guidelines, and carefully navigating negotiations and trade-offs.
